Ardent Spirits: The
Rise and Fall of Prohibition

I picked up this book
at a book sale because I'm a huge fan of historical sociology,
especially when it deals with drugs, sex or Rock and Roll.
John Kobler explores the
failed social experiment we know today as Prohibition. It was a
dark time in our country's government and society. At a time when
most Americans could really use a drink (to quote Sea Biscuit),
they were denied one - primarily by the influence of religious
zealots pressuring government on a grand scale.
Anyone examining the equally
failed "war on drugs" today, should find a copy of this book to
see how we can historically attribute the rise of organized crime,
corruption in government and how impossible it is to successfully
impose penalties on victimless crimes through this text.
It has been a few years
since I have read the text, but the history and the included pictures
make it worth reading over and over. |
